BAPTISMS

Baptism or Christening (they both mean the same) is the way that we welcome new members into the church. It takes the form of being sprinkled with water three times, to signify that the person believes in God the Father, the Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Baptism is about washing. If we are dirty we would have a bath or a shower to wash the grime away. And so when we are baptised, we wash away those sins which separate us from God. That is not to say that we never sin again, we do not become perfect, but baptism is a first and important step along the road!

Some people are baptised as babies. Others wait until they have grown old enough to decide for themselves before they are baptised. No one way is better than the other, since babies have always been baptised along with adults. All that matters is that the person becomes a Christian.

If you would like to be baptised, or have your baby Christened, all you need to do is to contact us at Saint John's Newbury. They will then arrange a date and a time to come a see you to talk about the service. At Saint John's we baptise either at the 10.30 am parish Mass, or on the second Sunday of each month at 3 pm in the afternoon. We try to keep things simple so that you do not have to worry!
